The old ways are the best ways: New Esports Potential Disciplines

There is a huge variety of games on the esports market. CS:GO and DOTA have become classics for a long time, the interest in which is still not extinguished, but the audience is clearly in demand for the new blood and new battles. The lists are replenishing rather slowly, so true fans of esports disciplines can only guess which game will bring together the best of the best under the auspices of the next tournament.

Most played disciplines and matches in esport

Despite the large selection of quality games, not all of them fit the tournament format. Let's take a look at the most important and popular competitive games.

CS:GO (Counter-Strike:Global Offensive)

Belongs to the genre of tactical online shooters. Two teams of five players each compete with each other to dominate the map.

The most common scenario is defusing a bomb. The «terrorists» are tasked with locating and defending the site of the bomb. Then the «counter-terrorists» must stop the terrorists by defusing the bomb. After a certain number of rounds, teams switch roles. Two teams in total play 30 rounds, with the first team to score 16 wins the set.

League of legends

Refers to the free-to-play genre of multiplayer online combat arena (MOBA). LoL is a real-time strategy game in which two teams compete against each other on a map designed like an arena and try to take over each other's bases.

Tournaments are usually played on 5v5 maps. The map is split into two halves so that each team has a territory with a basic structure. The goal of the game is to capture the main structure of the enemy. The game usually lasts from 15 to 60 minutes.

Dota 2

RTS MOBA game developed by Valve. The game mechanics of Dota 2 and League of Legends are very similar. The goal of the game in Dota 2 is to capture the enemy base. However, due to the abilities of many playable characters, Dota 2 is much more tactful and less focused on a single playable character.

The game is played by teams of five people. The round lasts from 15 to 60 minutes. The scenario of the tournament differs depending on the event. In a double knockout system, a team must lose twice to get out of the game.

Now let's talk about the most popular and beloved tournaments

ESL ONE (Electronic Sports League)

It is one of the most famous tournament organizers in Germany. The Cologne esports company offers tournaments and leagues in over 50 different disciplines. One of the tournament formats is ESL ONE, which takes place in Germany.

By the way, Cologne is not the only ESL venue. ESL ONE holds tournaments around the world in other cities: Katowice, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Birmingham, Genting, and Belo Horizonte.

League of Legends Championship Series (LCS)

While the ESL One and ESL Intel Extreme Masters feature a wide variety of games, LCS focuses on one particular game: League of Legends. The tournament is hosted by the creator of the game, Riot Games, and is divided into spring and summer, meaning the grand final is held twice a year.

10 teams participate in the championships, united by the same goal: to win the European League of Legends Championship. The undisputed record holder is the Fnatic team. The team is not only one of the oldest in the professional field of LoL, but also won the grand final many times.

The International

It is the world's largest esports event, with $25.5 million in Dota 2 tournament prize money at stake. Although the tournament was organized by the developer of the game, Valve, most of the prize money still comes from fans, accrued from the number of their in-game purchases. So, for example, in 2018, promoters paid only 1.6 million from the total sum.

The main contenders for getting into the lists of potential esports disciplines

Most of the popular esports games today have achieved success either through high interest from amateur players or strong support from developers. Also, the unshakable formula works: «it is easy to learn, but difficult to master». That is, the optimal game for an esports player should have a low threshold for entering the discipline, but also offer prospects for the player's growth and development.

Let's take a look at the top contenders for the esports tournament listings
