Participants of The International 10: Team Secret

With less and less time left until the main Dota 2 event, we keep on telling you about the teams participating in the upcoming tournament. In our previous article, we talked about Virtus.pro. Next up is the history of the European organization — Team Secret.

Team Secret Uncut

The organization was founded in 2014 by The International 2011 champion Clement «Puppey» Ivanov, who is also the captain of the Dota 2 squad. Since its foundation, Team Secret has consistently ranked among the strongest teams in the world. The team has not missed a single TI and has won five majors. According to the number of achievements, TS shares the first line with the team from the CIS — Virtus.pro. During the seven years of its existence, Team Secret earned $11,235,477, and its captain Clement «Puppey» Ivanov took part in all of The Internationals.

At the moment the Team Secret roster looks like this:

  • Michael «Nisha» Jankowski – midliner;
  • Lasse «MATUMBAMAN» Urpalainen – carry;
  • Eric Ludwig Jones «Zai» Wahlberg – offliner;
  • Clement "Puppey" Ivanov – full support / captain;
  • Yazied «YapzOr» Jaradat is a semi-support.

Team Secret's roster hasn't changed in two years, with the most recent reshafles occurring in 2018 and 2019. In 2018 Marcus «Ace» Hölgard and Adrian «Fata» Trinks left the team. They were replaced by Michael «Nisha» Jankowski and Ludwig «zai» Wahlberg. In 2019 midfielder Zheng «MidOne» Yek Nai and coach Lee «SunBhie» Jeong Jae left the team. In their place, curry Lasse «MATUMBAMAN» Urpalainen and coach Song Guo «Heen» Lee joined the team.

The start of 2019 was great for Team Secret. They won The Chongqing Major, and six months later took first place at MDL Disneyland® Paris Major. In early 2020 TS took first place at DreamLeague Leipzig – Major. In total, in 2020, they have 8 victories at the championships of various levels.

The year 2021 also began with a victory in the online tournament – Dota Pro Circuit 2021: Season 1 – Europe Division 1. Experts expected further high-profile victories from the European team, but during these six months, the team never won a single major tournament.

ONE Esports Singapore Major 2021

After winning Dota Pro Circuit 2021, Team Secret participated in the $500 000 ONE Esports Singapore Major 2021. The tournament began for Team Secret with a victory over Thunder. Next up for them was PSG.LGD, where they were matched up against Europeans 2-1 on maps. In the next match, Team Secret beat OB Esports x Neon with a close score of 2-1. But already in the match against IG they lost 2-0 and left the tournament finishing in 4th place.

Dota Pro Circuit 2021: Season 2

A month later Secret had Dota Pro Circuit 2021: Season 2 – Europe 1st Division, which they started with a defeat against Nigma. Next up were two matches versus HellBear Smashers and Tundra, each of which they won 2-1 on the maps. Not without losses – two in a row against Alliance and OG. In the final two games, TS beat Brame 2-0 and Liquid close by 2-1. As a result, Team Secret takes 4th place for the second tournament in a row.

WePlay AniMajor 2021 | Wild Card

The next event for Team Secret was WePlay AniMajor 2021 | Wild Card and, unfortunately, they did not make it to the group stage, finishing in 4th place. The only thing that should be mentioned is Team Secret vs. Nigma, during which, due to a server error, they had to replay the second map. At the time of departure, the match was in the 16th minute. Nigma was leading with a score of 11:5 and had a thousand golds advantage. Team Secret wanted to replay the map with new drafts.

Comment from the official Team Secret Twitter account:

For the record, we offered a complete remake with new drafts but ultimately the decision was taken by Valve and we have no say in it.

— Team Secret (@teamsecret) June 3, 2021

In general, the community was in agreement with the European stack, since such games usually need to be replayed from scratch, but Valve decided that the teams should replay the map without new drafts.

Matches and results of WePlay AniMajor 2021 | Wild Card

  • Secret 1:1 ASM.Gambit;
  • Secret 1:1 VG;
  • Secret 1:1 Execration;
  • Secret 1:1 Nigma;
  • Secret 0:2 IG.

ESL One Summer 2021

In June ESL One Summer 2021 was held, where the European team couldn't make it to the list of the tournament favorites. TS lost to Alliance 0-2 in the first match.  In the second they faced Nigma, and that was the last game for the Secret in this tournament. Despite all the efforts of Team Secret, Nigma won with a score of 1-2. As a result, Secret finished in 9th place, — the worst showing for a team at this level. After they departed from One Summer, ESL updated their ranking and now Secret is in 11th place. At the moment, Secret is not in its best shape and the recent tournaments confirm that. Despite winning the Dota Pro Circuit 2021, the team's level of play has dropped significantly compared to the game it showed during 2019-2020.

The Scandal

During the first division of the Dota Pro Circuit 2021 league for Europe, there was an unexpected conflict between Team Secret and OG. On the official Secret Twitter, there was a short video of a man taking out the trash. That would have been OK, but it had the Liquid logo on it and the OG logo on the trash.

Later, Team Secret tweeted a new message listing the aspects that OG needs to work on:

What followed was a response from the OG players themselves. OG offliner Sebastian «Ceb» Debs spoke negatively about Team Secret's SMM manager under the nickname midormeepo, who posted the tweet. Sebastian wrote all of these messages in private correspondence with the SMM manager. This text correspondence was published by the Secret employee himself.

Screeshot of the first two messeges from the slew of texts Ceb sent

The OG player immediately claimed that the phrase was taken out of context and posted all the messages sent to the SMM manager of Team Secret. In them, the esports athlete says that he treats Threshtok well, but believes that he should have ethical boundaries.

The last two messages made his point clear:

I have nothing against bashing, provoking, it’s all fair game. But there should be limits and ethics to things. We might all not have the same, but I can only assume we all have a little bit of it, and that counts for you too.

Later midormeepo posted  the entirety of the chat log in a screenshot with the English translation side-by-side.

Afterward, Sebastian talked about his acquaintance with midormeepo. According to his story, he helped him get a job in esports and was supportive in every way, so he doesn't understand why the SMM manager started harassing OG on Twitter.

It's worth mentioning that before the conflict with OG, midormeepo worked as a video maker for OG captain Johan «n0tail» Sundstein and mider Topias «Topson» Taavitsainen. As expected, after such a scandal, the guys' manager called midormeepo and informed him that he was fired from that position.

As for the Team Secret management, they fully support the guy and are not going to fire him. Also, midormeepo denied Sebastian's comment that he helped him in his career and noted that Sebastian is just trying to bully him, so he made up a whole story about how he built his career. Secret's SMM manager noted that he has been receiving threats from OG fans and unflattering messages about his fiancée.

The International 10 will be held in Bucharest at the largest stadium in Romania – Arena National from October 7 to 17. Previously, the Swedish government refused Valve to hold TI10.
